India: Inventions and Discoveries
The procedure for Plastic Surgery is described in detail in the ancient Indian medicine book called Sushruta Samhita over 2300 years ago. It describes, for instance, a nose surgery for someone who had lost his nose in a battle, by placing two bamboo stems and folding in freshly cut flesh from the forehead and grafting it over the tubes to give the man a perfect nose he could show it off in any magazine cover. Here's the picture of the Indian dude. Would you have noticed the surgery?
Although the worlds first university was built in Takshila around 700 BC, Nalanda University, built in 4th Century, is perhaps the most famous graduate school in the world. A Chinese scholar, Hsuan Tsang wrote that the university consisted of 400 buildings. The Admission test at the a NU (?) was so tough that 80 percent of the applicants failed the rigorous tests. Foreign students at NU had 60 different subject of study to write home about.:
