Fereydoun's Favorite Holiday in June

JUMP, JUMP HIGHER!

In many countries in the world, people build bonfires and jump over them.
In France, Belgium and Norway they jump over bonfires in June. They believe the crops will grow as high as you can jump.

In Persia (Iran) they jump over fire near their New Year in March.

In Syria you might stand around a bonfire on Christmas Eve with your family, and listen to a story or two.

The Chinese calendar is a Lunar Calendar, so the date of this holiday may change in countries that go by Solar Calendar. So this holiday is not necessarily in June. It’s one of my favorite holidays because it shows respect and devotion to a poet.

The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival

This festival takes place in June, but since the Chinese go by the lunar calendar the date for this holiday may change from one year to the next.

The origin of the boat race goes back to 4th or 3rd Century BC, when people jumped into their dragon boat to save a poet named Chu Yuan. After hundreds of years, the Chinese still get on their Dragon Boat to race as if Chu Yuan was drowning. They throw bamboo leaves filled with cooked rice into the water so that the fish eat the rice rather than the hero poet.

Today, the race is more elaborate, with a drummer standing in each boat and beating the rhythm for the oarsmen. As many years went by, the tradition has now developed to a full celebration. The Chinese consider this time to battle the evil and disease for the rest of the year. So they hang healthy herbs on the front door, drink nutritious concoctions. Another custom is to try to stand an egg on its end at exactly 12:00 noon. If you could do it, you have got yourself a very lucky year.

Fathers’ Day, Sunday, Mid June.

This is, by the way, the first day of summer in the northern hemisphere. So we have two reasons to celebrate this day. We owe the “Fathers Day” to a woman named Sonora Smart She recognized her father who brought up his daughter and five sons when his wife died at childbirth. She insisted on having a special day for her father because most people don’t realize the value of their fathers in their lives.

This is one of my favorite days too—particularly if my kids are around me.

Doesn’t your father deserve a pad on the back?

Here are famous quotes from Fathers:

· “…Because I’m your father. That’s why.”

· “How old are you now? Gee! What’s the hurry?”

· “Money doesn’t grow on a tree.”

· “What grade are you now?”

· “When I was your age…”

· “Ask me! Daddy Knows Everything.”

· “Go ask your mother.”
